There are three types of boxing gloves: bag gloves, sparring gloves and competiton gloves. You can read about their differences in our section.
Most of boxing gloves aren’t washable in washing machine. You should take care of your gloves by following these steps.
Size of gloves you should get depends on type of training or if you want to be a professional boxer, size depends on the match regulations. More information about it you can find it here.
We’ve compiled a hand-picked list of top 10 boxing gloves of 2018. The list is based on our author’s objective review and combination of various opinions from users all over the world. Continue reading to see all of our boxing glove reviews:
When it comes to Muay Thai boxing, these gloves are the most popular, worldwide. As they are manufactured and hugely popular in Thailand, you’ll be able to see them in any gym there and there simply isn’t a Thai trainer who doesn’t own at least a pair of these. The fact that you can buy them in almost any store in Thailand describes how popular these gloves actually are there.
These gloves have triple layer protection that makes them really soft on the inside and Air Mesh that makes them more breathable. With the Velcro Wrist Fastener, Twins special Boxing Gloves are probably the easiest ones to take on and off, but if you don’t secure the Velcro and its sharp edges by taping it up or something, it can open or cut your opponent. The extra padding makes them look a little bulky and the shape might remind you of the Western-style boxing glove.
It takes some time to break-in the Twins Special and until you do it can be a little hard to make a fist which can lead to wrist injuries if you are not careful in the beginning. Once they do break in, they become really comfortable, protective and safe.
The material used for outer parts of the gloves is highly durable genuine leather that won’t crack in the front area of the gloves with regular use and the stitches are very tight which increases the durability of the gloves. You can be sure that they won’t fall apart easily, moreover, they will last you for years.
These gloves come in many different styles or colors, but the aesthetics can be described as only ok.
If you don’t care about the looks much, these can be just perfect for your Thai training and matches.
This is one pair of gloves that stands out among all of Title’s boxing gloves.
The Title Gel World Bag Gloves are the perfect choice for punching bag kind of training. It has all the safety features for all kinds of training, but the most important one for bag punching is good wrist support and Title supports it perfectly. It also has a lot of padding quantity that returns into an original form shortly after you take the gloves off which is one of the things that makes them long lasting. They are also very comfortable, even the thumb, which is kind of unusual and often an issue when it comes to boxing gloves. Another thing that makes them long-lasting and durable is the material they are made of which is the cowhide leather. You might think that that raises their price, but these gloves price is actually under $100.
The gloves are flawlessly constructed with all the stitches tight enough and in the perfect place.
What I like about the Title gloves the most is their old school design. You can find them in red, pink or black without many details.
However, these aren’t the ideal sparring gloves. While they have all the safety features for you, they wouldn’t be the safest for your sparring partner, and if using these gloves you could seriously hurt him.
These are one of the cheapest Everlasts boxing gloves, but don’t be fooled by that, the gloves are just as good as some more expensive pairs.
The gloves are made of high quality synthetic leather material and fit perfectly onto your hands. They tighten the wrist just enough to secure it without making you feel uncomfortable.
What you really want from the glove is to protect your hands and wrists. Continuous punching, especially if it is not done right, can cause so many injuries and overall discomfort. That’s why the gloves need the right, thick padding. These certainly do protect you with the double foam padding layer which not only protects you, but contours your fists naturally. The strap that secures the wrist tightens everything up and gives you curved anatomical grip.
The design is easily describable in one word as ok and comes in black, red, and blue classic colors.
My favourite thing is fresh anti-microbial feature that prevents sweat and bad smell of your hands and gloves.
These are one of the best gloves for boxing and MMA even though they are designed as entry level gloves. There are many design features that increase the comfort and protection for your hands and wrists. There is the panel of high-density mesh under the wrist which helps to control the temperature and keeping your hands and gloves dry. Outer material used for these gloves is SkinTex imitation leather which is soft enough not to injure your sparring partner badly.
The Venum Elite Boxing Gloves are made very well, as expected, and they are not likely to wear out quickly. The shape is great; it contours your fist perfectly so you can nicely squeeze it.
The gloves are nicely padded to reduce the knuckle injuries, but the extra padding in the palm area decreases the stability of the glove. When determining a size, go for the tightest ones for your hands because the tighter fit means more stability.
Aesthetically, gloves are typically Venum. That is kind of a rough design with raw colors, mostly liked by men, and you either love it or hate it. If you love it, it comes in many different styles so you can choose a perfect one for you.
These goat leather Mexican gloves are for those who want to really feel their punching landings.
Most of these gloves are made with less knuckle protection, but these have 2-inch padding, which is quite unusual for formerly unpopular Mexican gloves. Cleto Reyes Hybrid gloves are mostly made for sparring and hitting the heavy bag kind of training.
The design is sleek and comfortable and almost retro, with the sense of strong Mexican heritage. The gloves are available in a variety of colors and even with the Mexican flag on them. The minimal padding gives them the slim look and the long cuff reduces the pain in your wrists.
The comfort and support of these gloves is incredible which makes it easy for fighters to train without feeling too much pressure on their hands or wrists. Great thing is that they are comfortable to use right out of the box but the more you use them the more they break in and become even more comfortable.
The brand is it has both laces and the Velcro which makes it double secure around the wrist. Laces are always great because they allow you to customize the tightness according to your needs and Velcro double secures it.
The material used for these gloves is cowhide leather that assures durability and you can certainly tell the quality only by touching the glove. The lining is good too especially because it does a great job keeping the hands dry. I’ve noticed that the stitches are perfectly straight and even which tells a lot about craftsmanship quality.
What I love the most about these gloves is that they have no break-in period. They already feel like they have been broken in and now you are ready to train comfortably. They allow you to form a natural solid fist. Just as the previous model we’ve reviewed, this one has the lace tightening system that allows you to adjust the tiredness around your wrists just as you want it.
The design can be described in one word as ok. Or even better, plane, but not in a good way. However, the looks aren’t the most important thing when it comes to boxing gloves, although some people take it very seriously. What’s more important is how protective these gloves are, and they are quite enough. The padding level is great and it really does prevent you from knuckle injuries.
They do not provide much support to the wrist though. You won’t necessarily injure your wrist while using them, but you will definitely feel some shock of the impact shoot through.
The material used for these gloves makes them so comfortable. They are very soft and do a great job keeping my hands dry while wearing them. This kind of comfort is probably the main reason to make the purchase right away.
These are Ringside’s affordable entry-level boxing gloves, designed for heavy bag punching kind of training. They weren’t made of real leather but of synthetic leather-like material, which doesn’t make them as durable as some higher end models but for a starting boxing glove for beginners, these are more than fine. Ringside Apex boxing gloves are highly supportive and very comfortable. They have two-inch foam padding and really strong wrist support that will prevent you from any kind of injury.
The design with large brand logo on the front is simple but bold and eye catching. There is also the Ringside logo on the hook and loop part which is a bit too much if you ask me, but most of the boxers seem to like it.
The inner lining has the Ringside’s Stay-Dry ventilation holes that provide a lot of airflows and prevents sweating of the hands. After the training, when all other parts of your body are sweaty your hands will remain dry.
One of my favorite things is that they are pre-curved during the manufacturing so they won’t have to break in. that means that you will be able to use them comfortably right out of the box.
These gloves can be found in so many different color combinations, even weird ones like pink and green.
The Winning Training Boxing Gloves offer the fighter a lot of protection, as they should. The inside of the glove has the timeless foam design that is very protective and supportive but still allows the wearer’s hands to breathe. These gloves provide enough space for the fighter’s hands but at the same time, they are snug enough to provide the support too, which makes them incredibly comfortable and safe. Since these are training gloves they are designed with the aim to give even better boxing techniques and they teach the wearer to punch correctly while protecting it at the same time. The form of the glove contours the natural shape of the user’s fist which is another feature that increases comfortability. When it comes to tightening the gloves I prefer the lace tightening over the hoop and loop because the lace feature allows you to adjust the tightness to fit your own needs.
The gloves are very well crafted and made of real leather which makes them quite durable. The combination of good design and performance is what everyone is looking for and these gloves have it all, so if you want to take your fighting gear to the next level and invest a little more into your equipment, look no further.
This is a relatively new brand that has already found a huge fan base. And though they are hugely popular in Canada and the USA, there is only one professional boxer using it, so far, and it is possible that you are a little skeptical about buying them. Seeing the Rivals huge potential, we decided to put it on the list of the best boxing gloves and review them for you.
As the main purpose of any boxing gloves is protection, that’s the first thing we put to a test. And let me tell you, these gloves are more than capable of making your hands safe. They have a 1.7 inches thick padding layer that is very absorbent and not that they are just safe for you, but for your sparring partner too.
The Rival brand is proud of their new and modern design, which to be honest, really is unique and everybody seem to love it. I guess I’m the only person who doesn’t so we won’t talk about the looks that much. The main color combinations are red and white, black and white, and blue and white. The only issue, when it comes to design, as I heard, was about the hook and loop straps. They mostly had trouble strapping their gloves and they needed to ask someone to help them with that. However, that is the problem with most of the gloves with the hook and loop configuration, but the lace gloves, that are my personal favorites, acquire someone’s assistance too.
One more thing, if you pay as much as you would for these gloves, you will want to your money’s worth. These gloves are one of few pairs that are actually capable of remaining almost as good as new for a couple of years of heavy use. When it comes to durability, those are one of the best in the market.
Here we have another pair of Mexican, real leather boxing gloves with the unique design.
Everlast MX is made of Piel Planchada luxury leather that gives them the wrinkled look. The padding isn’t traditional Mexican, which would be horsehair, but the hybrid mixture of foam and horsehair padding which works incredibly well. It prevents from knuckle and wrist injuries perfectly. However, the primary protection for the wrists is the strap or lace that tightens the gloves around the wrist. In this case, there is the lacing that I usually prefer, because you can customize it to your needs. However, it seems like that isn’t the case with Everlast MX. The lacing is kind of loose even when you tighten it all the way which doesn’t provide much of a wrist control.
What I absolutely love about the Everlast MX gloves is how much the designers paid attention to details. The leather, the workmanship… Aesthetically, everything is astounding.
In order to pick the right gloves for you, you need to know how you’ll be using them. We can divide boxing gloves into three categories based on their purpose.
1. Bag gloves:
Bag gloves are used for training where you actually only hit the heavy bag in the gym.
These are made to protect the wearer’s hands from heavy hitting of the bag. Bag gloves can be used for all kinds of training in the gym.
2. Sparring gloves:
As the name indicates, these gloves are designed for sparring in order to protect both fighters during the training.
Since you have the contact with another person, the gloves have to be smooth and safe not just for you, but for them too.
3. Competition Gloves:
These are a lot similar to sparring gloves with a few little differences. Competition gloves are designed to protect both fighters in the ring, but there are some official regulations that the design of the glove has to fulfill, like the weight, for instance, and that is why these gloves are less padded than other types of boxing gloves.
If you are ready to invest in new boxing gloves you really need to be sure you are buying the right pair because those will be the most significant item of your boxing equipment.
Now, there are some factors that you should pay attention to before making the purchase.
Here they are:
1. Padding level:
This is probably the most important thing when it comes to boxing gloves. Without the right padding, you risk injuring your knuckles and even wrists. There are three types of padding that are usually used for boxing gloves: Horse hair padding, foam padding and the mix of two of that.
Horse hair padding is durable and it helps you hit harder, but it isn’t much of protection for your hands. There are still some companies that produce gloves with this kind of padding, but slowly, it will become history.
The foam padding is actually made of highly absorbent PVC foam and latex. This padding became really popular among the boxers because it is really protective and it makes the gloves more comfortable, but among the designers too because they realized that the foam can make the gloves versatile.
The hybrid mixture is the newest one and it proved to be the best protection for your knuckles. I personally, love it the most.
2. The glove material:
Materials are really important for the durability of the glove and for the feeling of comfort.
Most of the gloves are made of leather, cowhide or goatskin because those leathers provide the most durability and flexibility. Those are considered high-quality gloves and they come with a little higher price than the gloves made of vinyl or some kind of synthetic leather.
Mostly used material for the inside part of the glove is cotton, because it doesn’t cause allergies. However, paddings are mostly made of high-density polyurethane. In the end, the gloves are stitched with nylon thread.
In the Types of boxing gloves part, you could have seen that gloves are divided into categories based on their purpose.
Defining what you’ll be using them for is really important before the purchase.
4. Previous boxing experience:
If you have had some previous boxing experience you already know what I’m talking about.
You already know what type of gloves you need, you already know a little about the brands… It might be the time to level up your gear. You already know everything you need, now just pick the perfect pair from our top ten list.
However, if you are an absolute beginner, you might want to try out some cheaper gloves at first. But don’t worry, cheap doesn’t mean low quality. At least it doesn’t on our list.
As you can see in the table above, the glove size is displayed as an ounce (oz) and you will see that the most common sizes are 8, 10, 12, 14 and 16 oz. The easiest way to pick the right pair of gloves is to buy going to the store and putting them on to see if they fit and how comfortable they are, however, if you want to purchase the gloves online, that isn’t possible. So, to determine your size you will need to take your weight or height into a count as well as the method of use. If you hit the heavy bag or some other boxing training aid, you will want to use bigger gloves.
There are also some sizes commonly used for different types of training. For instance, if you are using them for sparring the common size would be 16 oz, regardless of the weight, but if you are using them for competition the common sizes are 8 or 10 oz.
If you want to be a professional boxer, you should know that the size of the gloves depends on the match regulations. However, the most common sizes used by professional boxers on matches are 8 oz and 10 oz.
Those were all the things I could think of to tell you about the boxing gloves, now is up to you to make a decision.
It is really simple actually. Define the purpose, and the budget and that will narrow down the list a lot for you. Then, it comes to details and your personal preference.
I would, for instance, always go for the Winning Training Boxing Gloves because they meet all of my needs, plus I really like the design.
Safer and more comfortable boxing training is just a purchase away!
