It happened to you sometime to hairspray from your hair stay stuck all over your curling iron. If you ever wonder how to clean your curling iron, here you can find some helpful tips.
There are a lot different ways to curl your hair. The way of curling your hair it depends of a curling iron you have but most often you need to wrap your hair around your curling iron.
Size of curling iron depends only on you. Only thing you need to know before buying curling iron is that different sizes of curling iron provide different types of curls.
All the curling irons do the same thing – they curl your hair. The differences are only in the style and definition of the curls of them makes. We made a list of seven types of curling iron and you can read it here.
We’ve compiled a hand-picked list of top 10 curling irons of 2018. The list is based on our author’s objective review and combination of various opinions from users all over the world. Continue reading to see all of our curling iron reviews:
This iron features the best quality tourmaline and ceramic ionic barrel and the best heater tools with self-regulating temperature which prevents not just over-heating but under-heating too. This feature also manages to maintain steady heat which makes styling your hair really easy. If you have dry, damaged hair or you dye it on regular basis, this wand might be the best choice for you. No matter how damaged your hair is, Xtava Twist will still make your curls bouncy and your hair-ends smooth.
If you are wondering why this wand is in the top of list of top ten curling irons for fine hair, one of the reasons is because of its 22 heat settings that allow you to set the temperature just as your hair needs, using a digital screen that will display the exact temperature of your curling iron. The heat ranges from 200 to 410 degrees so you can decide on the amount of heat and completely control your iron. Plus, you wouldn’t believe how quick the wand is to heat up and to use. It also features a 60 min automatic shutoff that prevents any possible damage from overheating.
If big bouncy curls and waves is what you want, Xtava Twist will be your best friend from now on because that’s exactly what this wand does with its 1 – 1.5’’ tapered barrel, plus you will be able to choose how bouncy and lose your curls will be or combine them to pump up the volume of your fine hair. In order to get both smaller and bigger curls you all you have to do is just use different ends of the barrel.
What earlier mentioned, ceramic and tourmaline technology, actually provides for your hair is smooth, frizz-free silky look, while protecting it from damage. Even though this article is about curling irons for fine hair, the wand we are talking about is actually for more than that one type. It’s for all hair types to be accurate.
The wand is very easy to use. All you have to do is turn it on and adjust the temperature to begin with curling. What you want to do for perfect loose curls, is just twirl your hair strand around the barrel and hold it there. After about 8 to 10 seconds pull the barrel away and you’ll meet your firs Xtava Twist curl. Repeat the same steps on your whole hair and you will be amazed by the final effect. I feel like I should warn you that the barrel gets very, very hot so you might want to protect your hands with the protecting gloves that come with the iron.
Great for both lose waves and more defined spirals, Bed Head Rock N’ Roller can help you make any curly hairstyle, and it can do it quickly. The wand features tourmaline ceramic technology that creates shiny and frizz-free curls in no time. It has no clamp that can sometimes lave kinks on your hair, but the hair still won’t slip down the iron because the tourmaline ceramic barrel won’t let it (and you will hopefully hold it), so you won’t have to worry about that. Don’t be confused about the design either, because Rock N’ Roller works just as any other curling iron. Just twirl the hair strands around its funky bubble barrel and in 8 to 10 seconds you will have the perfect curl that you wanted. There are two main hairstyles that you can achieve with this iron, though, and all the difference is in the way you twirl your hair onto the barrel. If you would like some spiral curls, just twirl the hair around the bubbles and if you’re more in the mood for some loose waves wrap your hair around the bubbles. The final effect is the smooth and shiny flawless curl without damaging your hair.
The grip you are actually holding while styling your hair is rubberized which will give you a solid grip so you won’t have to worry about the iron slipping from your hand. The wand features a safety stand that keeps the hot barrel away from the countertops while you are preparing the next strand or just waiting for it to heat enough. When it comes to heating, there is a simple dial control setting on the side of the handle that you can use to change the heat settings. Now, the settings aren’t marked on the dial, so it can be a little difficult in the beginning to adjust the settings to your needs, but once you do you’ll be more than pleased. The adjusting, of course, means that you will have to try everything out on your hair before deciding what works the best for it, but don’t worry that won’t cause any damage on it. What really bugs me, though, is where the designers decided to place the dial. It is positioned on the side of the handle where your fingers can accidentally slip and change the setting, and that happens often. Luckily, the iron has the rapid heat recovery, so the barrel will stay hot longer than you’ll need to change the setting back, but it is still annoying every time.
If you are new to clampless curling irons, you will definitely need some learning and adjusting in the beginning, but you’ll see that it is even easier to use than normal curling irons with clamps or some other clampless irons because its unique bubble design serves as a great guide. The product also comes with a style guide that will help a lot in the beginning and heat protection glove that will often save your hasty fingers.
The third curling iron on our top ten list is this gorgeous wand from a very popular brand of hair products. The iron comes with three interchangeable barrels. The barrels are 19mm, 25mm, and 32mm wide, for different sizes of curls. I like that the smallest one isn’t too small to make your hair look ridiculous and that the big one isn’t too big so that can be used on short hair (like neck length). These barrels come in a really nice box along with the iron and the heat protection glove. What you need to do to switch the barrel is to, first, release the one that is attached to the iron by pressing the two knobs on the front and the back of the grip and once you hear them click you’ll know that they are all the way pressed and that you can remove the barrel and replace it with another one. Just remember that you’ll need to hold those two knobs through the whole process. Releasing them will lock in the new barrel which will then be safe to use.
You can plug the wand anywhere in the room because it features a quite long cord that swivels all the way around (360 degrees), so you can move with it easily.
One of my favorite things about this iron is the barrel material. Titanium is way better conductor than steel which allows more accurate temperature control. These barrels heat up really quickly and maintain the same temperature during the use. NuMe Titan 3 can be heated up to almost 400 degrees, but I wouldn’t recommend heating it more than 180 degrees unless you want to damage your hair. The iron features a little display on the grip that shows the exact temperature. If the wand is heated up to 180 degrees the display will light blue, however, if you set it above that temperature is will light up red. I love this feature because it is a great reminder.
The curling iron number four is this wand that allows you to size up your curls however you want with four differently-sized ionic ceramic tourmaline-coated barrels included in the set. Whether you like super skinny or big and glamorous curls, you can get them with the HSI Professional Groover Curling Wand. The barrels come in sizes 3/4 inch, 1 inch, 1.5 inches and 3/4-1inch which actually means that there isn’t the curl you won’t be able to make. The barrels aren’t just ceramic plated, they are actually made of real ceramic and they are tourmaline coated which makes the curls smooth and frizz-free during the whole day.
The iron features the 8 Heat Balance microsensors that regulate the temperature and evenly distribute heat through the whole barrel, so you won’t have to worry where you place your hair in order to get the consistent curl. You can choose from 15 heating settings that will be shown on a little display. The wide temperature range of 170-450°F allows you to choose the setting that will suit your hair the most. If you have fine hair I would recommend staying below 200 degrees, though. The iron features the infrared technology that will not only make your hair look glamorous, but also keep it healthy because it won’t dry it out. It will lock in all natural oils and moisture instead.
The iron heats up within seconds, so you won’t lose any precious time when in hurry. The design of the iron is sleek and it sports a nice rubberized non-slip grip. The earlier mentioned display that allows you to digitally set the temperature is also placed on the grip.
HSI Professional Groover Curling Wand comes with the heat protection glove that will keep your fingers safe even if you accidentally touch the hot barrel.
This fully automatic professional curl machine allows you to latterly just put a lock of your hair in it and let the machine curl it. It features the MaxLife PRO Brushless Motor Technology that guides you according to the setting you’ve chosen. You won’t even need to time the iron; it will time its self and beep to let you know to take the hair out. All of those things make the process of curling effortless, but there are a lot of other features that make this product even greater, like an auto shut off and sleep mode. Both of these features save the energy and make the iron safe from overheating. So, if you ever forget to shut off the unit and leave it unattended, you won’t have to worry about the thing because the iron will automatically go to sleep and the second you come back and pick it up motion sensor feature will instantly heat it up to the level it was heated before.
BaBylissPROMiracurl Professional Curl Machine allows you to choose heat, time and direction settings and everything else is done automatically.
There are three timed settings that you can choose from and they are only different in how long they heat the hair. The settings are marked with numbers 8, 10 and 12 and that actually represent the number of seconds needed to create the desired curl. If you want loose waves the right setting would be the one that takes eight seconds, but if you want glamorously defined curl the right setting is the one that takes the longest. Something in the middle can be achieved with the setting that takes about 10 seconds.
The machine doesn’t have the normal barrel like other irons, but the Nano Titanium Curl Chamber that doesn’t damage your hair even the slightest while the stop and reverse feature doesn’t allow it to get tangled and stuck or even burnt. There is also a steam option that you would thing frizzles your hair, but it doesn’t. It is actually the safest way to curl your hair into a shiny, smooth and frizz-free long-lasting curl.
The machine comes with complete instructions that detail explains how to use it according to the type of your hair and the type of the curls you would like to make, but here is a short version just to show you how easy it is to use. All you have to do is just place a lock of your hair where you want the curl to start into a V section of the machine. Just make sure that the hair isn’t longer than 1.5’’ and that the opened side of the machine is always facing your head. Then just close the handles and you will see that the machine will automatically draw the hair inside. You have previously chosen the setting so just wait until the machine beeps and take your perfect curl out of it. However, if you’ve chosen the No Timing setting, all you have to do is keep the handles closed until you are ready to take the curl out. I wouldn’t recommend heating the hair for longer than 12 seconds per curl.
This iron doesn’t have a normal barrel like other irons we talked about above, but the ceramic curl chamber which draws your hair in and softly heats it from each side creating a perfectly smooth curl. Depending on the type of the curl you want, you can choose from three settings marked with numbers 8, 10 and 12. If you want to create loose beachy waves choose the setting 8 that takes eight seconds (3 beeps) to create the perfect loose wave. If you would rather like to wave around with soft curls, choose the setting 10. It takes ten seconds (4 beeps) to create the desired curl. The third setting takes 12 seconds (5 beeps) to create the Kate Middleton bouncy curl that stays perfect during the whole day. It does look completely different than other curling irons so I feel like I should explain how to use it. Place the clean and dry hair strand into the unit where you want the curl to begin and simply hold the machine with the open part of the chamber facing towards the head. Once you close the handle, the machine will draw your hair into the chamber automatically and the curling process will start. Your hair will be heated from all directions for as long as the setting you’ve chosen requires. The iron can also be used with no timing which requires simply holding the handles closed until you decide to remove your hair (I wouldn’t recommend more than 12 seconds per curl). These features make the iron flexible and suitable for all hair types.
The heat can be regulated according to your needs up to 450 degrees, but be aware that all the temperatures above 200 degrees are more suitable for thick hair than for fine hair.
The iron features the safety feature that turns it off if try to curl too big a lock of hair. I think this is very important for irons with this design because if the iron tries to curl your hair even if there is too much of it, it will obviously get stuck and even if you manage to take it out somehow that will be really painful.
If you love to show off fabulous and silky curls, this iron is for you. The curler features the ceramic and crushed-pearl technology that smooths your curls and makes them glamorous as you like. This technology actually distributes heat evenly through the whole barrel and makes beautifully defined curls.
Since the design is clampless, this iron is actually called a curling wand. This is great because there is no chance of getting curls with kinks if the clamp is too tight. In the beginning, it is a little awkward and tricky to use, especially if you are used to clamp holding our lock of hair while curling but once you learn how to use it properly, you will gain more control over the gadget and will be able to create any type of curls with it.
The heat of an iron is one of the most important things for creating the shape of the curl but also in preventing the possible damage to your hair. This iron can heat up to 410 degrees within only 30 seconds. The highest levels of heat are more suitable for thick and strong hair than for thin hair. If your hair type is fine I wouldn’t recommend heating the barrel above 200 degrees. If you are wondering how to set the desired temperature, don’t worry, this iron features a variety of different heat setting options that you can set and monitor on a digital display.
This barrel comes with a few safety features like, my personal favorite, auto shut-off which prevents any damage if you ever leave it turned on unattended. This means that the iron will shut off after a certain period of time if you don’t use it. So if you ever forget to turn it off and leave it plugged in there is no way that the iron will cause any damage. Another great thing is that it comes with a heat-resistant glove that protects you from burning your fingers. This actually happens a lot with curling wands because the lack of the clamp forces you to hold your hand close to the hot barrel.
The wand comes with a quite long warranty period of four years which tells us a lot about the quality of this product. If you have any issues with this device Remington support will be happy to help you with it.
What I don’t like is that the wand comes with a is only 5.7 feet long cord, which is actually quite short and it doesn’t allow you to plug it anywhere you would like but only to an electrical outlet close to the mirror. Manoeuvring is also a lot harder than with longer cords.
Another dislike is that if your hair is shorter than shoulder length, you will be able to make beachy waves, but not the actual curls no matter what temperature setting you choose.
No matter which type of hair you have, Infiniti Pro by Conair Curling Iron will be able to curl it in no time and without causing any damage to it. It heats up faster than many other irons we reviewed which saves up a lot of precious time. The smooth design comes with the ceramic barrel that assures you won’t get hot spots but the equally distributed temperature through the whole barrel. The tourmaline coating over the ceramic barrel is probably the first thing I check when buying an iron because it prevents frizz and makes more likely that the hair will stay nicely curled through the whole day. Well, the good news is that this old-fashioned looking iron has not just the tourmaline coating but the nanotechnology too, to make your hair smooth and reduce all the unwanted static.
This curling iron is capable of reaching really high temperatures up to 400 degrees in just 30 seconds. You can set the ideal heat for your hair type by choosing one of five different heat settings. Each setting has different heat level which makes this iron usable for any type of hair. What’s great is that you can easily set and monitor the temperature on the small LED screen on the grip. Once you set the heat you don’t have to worry about it anymore because the iron has features like the heat recovery system that help maintain the desired heat.
I’m one of those people that are always late and always leave the house in hurry. I can never be totally sure I’ve done everything I needed to and if I’ve used any kind of iron I can never remember if I turned it off and that thought haunts me until I get home and see. You have no idea how relieving it is to me to know that Infiniti Pro by Conair Curling Iron has an auto-off feature that automatically turns of the iron within 60 minutes.
As great as this iron is, there are still a couple of things I actually don’t like about it. One of those things is the on/off button positioned on the worst place the designers could think of. When I used this iron for the first time, I honestly thought that they did it on purpose. There are so many other places on this gadget that could be used for this button, but no, it is positioned perfectly to hit it while using (more than once). This definitely shouldn’t be a deal breaker for anyone because all you really need to do is turn it back on, but it does annoy you especially if you don’t realize it right away and the heat suddenly disappears.
No matter what type of curls you’d like to create from beachy waves to Taylor Swift 2006 look, the Hot Tools Professional Curling Iron can be a great helper. It features ten Multi-Heat Control settings that allow you to adjust the temperature from 280 degrees to 430 degrees provided by the 85 watts of power. What’s great is that the desired heat maintains constant and well balanced out from lower to super-hot levels. It features 4 different heat temperature settings that allow you to adjust it to your hair texture and type better. There is also an on/off button that automatically turns on the iron to the desired heat setting thanks to the built-in memory set temperature feature.
This iron also features a 1 1/4 barrel coated with 24K gold. I don’t think that really does anything particular for the health of your curls, but it looks good and attracts attention. So, that is the first thing you notice when you see the iron, but there are some way more attractive features underneath the gold.
The heat provided by this iron is good enough to handle the toughest of hair types without causing any damage to it. Of course, if you use it at the maximum heat it will burn the ends of your hair, and there is no way to avoid that, especially if you have fine hair, but if you keep the heat at the 280 degrees the iron will be gentle with it and still create some long-lasting curls.
The iron features the clamp that holds the hair strand while curling, so you won’t have to worry about burning your fingers as you would with using a curling wand without the heat protection glove.
What I really don’t like is the packaging. It reminds me of a cheap product from some toy store. That wouldn’t bother me that much if this was an average product, but something this good really doesn’t deserve that kind of box.
This beautifully designed curling iron with white grip has a gold barrel with ceramic technology that gives your hair that smooth glossy finish with like you get when having your hair done in a salon. The barrel is 1 inch wide and it gradually narrows to a half an inch at the end. This makes it possible for you to create differently sized curls.
Perfectwo Studio Salon Curling Iron features the PTC heater that provides constant temperature through the whole barrel and maintains it during the use. This is really important for creating consistent curls through the whole length. The chosen heat temperature shows up on the LED screen which makes it really easy to control. The iron can reach temperatures that even professionals love, with maximum heat of 410 degrees, but since it doesn’t have tourmaline coating on the barrel, I recommend using some hair protection products before curling, even on the lowest heat levels. Don’t get me wrong, the tourmaline coating doesn’t protect your hair, but it provides frizz free look a lot easier and faster than irons without that coating. That means that you would have to heat your hair sections longer to get the smooth look and that, obviously damages your hair if you aren’t using the right protection.
My favourite feature as you can assume is the auto shut off that turns off the iron automatically after 60 minutes of no use to prevent accidents and potential damage due to heat.
Something that you’ll most definitely love is that the Perfectwo Studio Salon Curling Iron comes with a lifetime warranty. That certainly tells a lot about the quality of this product.
With the sea of different hair products available on the market, it can be tough to find the one that will perfectly suit both your styling needs and the hair type. There are a few things you should pay attention to when choosing your ideal hair curler, but many of you probably have no idea what those are. That’s why I’ve created a simple guide to help you decide on the best curling iron for the desired results.
Materials are probably the most important thing to check, and, to me, definitely the first. First of all the type of curls, you’ll get depends on the material you choose, a lot. Secondly, not all the materials are hair friendly… especially if you have fine hair. All of the curling irons can be roughly selected in two groups based on the material and those are Titanium and Ceramic.
Titanium is really popular material for curling irons because of its durability. It is lightweight and heats up quickly. Ceramic also heats up quickly and provides consistent heat, but none of these materials are that great if they aren’t coated with tourmaline. Even if you’ve heard of it before, you probably have no idea what that really is, so let’s clear that up. Tourmaline is a semi-precious stone that has a lot of great properties that will limit the possible damage to your hair due to heat. It produces more than necessary negative ions to counter the positive ions in the hair that is dry and damaged. All of that helps to maintain your hair shiny, smooth and frizz-free.
Different barrel sizes provide different types of curls and different hairstyles.
Super small barrels measure from 0.5 to 0.75 inches and they are the best choice for shorter hair and vintage hairstyles.
Small barrels measure from 0.75 to 1 inch and are perfect for medium hair length and women with wavy hair who wants the curls to have a little more definition. This size of barrel provides the most natural look due to its size that is the closest to an actual curls size.
Medium barrels measure from 1 to 1.75 inches and are ideal for beachy waves and casual hairstyles especially for longer hair lengths.
Large barrel measures up to 2 inches and this is the one for those who want those huge glamorous, bouncy curls and a big volume.
Not any curling iron can be used for any hair type. I mean it can, but it shouldn’t…
Thin, fine hair requires a curling iron with adjustable heat. The more settings the better, but I should warn you not to go above 200 degrees if you don’t want to burn your hair. And make sure to use the right heat protection.
Thick hair is one of the hardest to style because due to its thickness it is really heavy and although you can easily make the curl, it won’t last for so long because the weight will pull the hair down and straighten it. Perfect curling irons for thick hair are simply those that can reach really high temperatures like 400-450 degrees. As you will probably need to hold it for a little longer I recommend finding one that is lightweight. And necessarily find the right heat protection for your hair!
Frizz-prone hair is the easiest to curl. How do I know? Well, I have one. Frizzy hair is usually naturally wavy and it tends to those curls already… all you have to do is add some definition to those waves or curls and smooth them. Any ceramic tourmaline coated curling wand will be good for this. Just don’t use the highest temperatures and do anything needed to protect your hair ends from cracking because once that happens there will be nothing you can do to style your frizzy hair and it will take a while to heal it.
It seems like as soon as you master one hair tool the new one comes out and you never really know is the new thing better or should you use it as the addition to the old unit you already have.
When it comes to curling irons and wands, let me clear this out for you right away. They all do the same thing. They curl your hair. The differences are only in the style and definition of the curls each of them makes. Newer products, of course, come with a variety of new features as well. The only question you should actually ask yourself is ‘have I chosen the right one for my hair type’ or how to do that, but we will talk about that later.
There are currently seven types of curling irons and here they are:
1. Curling iron with the clamp – for more complicated hairstyles:
Curling irons that have clamps are the easiest to use and create strong, well-defined curls, which makes them perfect for making some more complicated hairstyles. To make a curl with this iron you start wrapping the lock of your hair from the end to the roots or wherever you want the curl to begin. That’s why they are always the most defined on the ends of your hair. Size of the curls depends on the size of the barrel your curling iron has, as well as the amount of hair you use for one strand. For tight, spiral curls you should use the skinniest barrel possible on thin hair strands. For looser curls it is completely opposite, what you want to use are larger barrel iron and a little thicker hair strand.
2. Clampless curling iron – curling wand – for loose curls and waves:
The biggest difference between curling wand and the curling iron is that the wand doesn’t have the clip, and that’s about it when it comes to design. But when it comes to hairstyles that can be done with them, the only difference is, as I already said earlier, iron creates more defined, more polished ringlets while the wand creates more natural waves. Since wands don’t feature the clasp, they are made of materials like tourmaline ceramic or titanium so your hair won’t slip down the barrel while curling. If you don’t feel like waving around with glamorous curls and want more natural look in a few minutes, the wand is the product for you. I used to make those loose waves with a flat iron before (don’t ask) but I have to tell you, the wand has made my life so much easier.
3. Marcel curling iron – for any hairstyle that includes curls:
Marcel iron is a curling wand that obviously doesn’t have a clamp, but it also doesn’t have a spring and it is usually mastered by professionals. This type of iron requires an expert handling and it can be really difficult using it at home, but if you manage to master it will help you make so many different hairstyles with its versatility. There simply isn’t a hairstyle that includes curls that this gadget can’t fix.
4. Bubble curling iron – for effortless beachy waves and volume:
This is another type of curling wand. It is very user friendly and ideal for beginners who would like to create some really nice beachy waves at home. This type of iron has a textured barrel that helps you as a guide is terms of placement. For different types of waver or curls you simply wrap your hair around or over the bubbles in different ways and that’s all you really have to master. These irons don’t really give you those glamorous Hollywood curls, but they make your hair look a lot more voluminous. Mastering this type of curling iron literally doesn’t take more than a couple of days.
5. Spiral Curling Iron – for Retro Hollywood look:
Now, this is a gadget needed for making the Retro Hollywood curls. It has the cylinder shape that creates a pattern in form of the letter S that helps making the perfect retro curls. It gives your hair that sexy vintage look just make sure to arm yourself with patience and time because it will take you a while to create it since this iron creates small curls on selected areas.
6. Double-Barrel Curling Iron – for the flawless ‘I woke up like this’ kind of look:
These irons are hair tools that create dramatic and sexy curls. It adds texture to your hair and makes it really glamorous but in everyday kind of style. The curls are fabulous but they look natural. The only problem is that this iron can’t curl your hair if it’s shorter than shoulder length.
7. Curling machines – for effortless curling:
The machine looks completely different than all the other curling irons. It doesn’t have the normal barrel like other irons, but the Curl Chamber that draws your hair in and softly heats it from each side creating a perfect smooth curl. This is the easiest tool for hair curling because all you have to do is choose the setting and the machine will do everything else for you.
After the detailed research we’ve come down to the top ten curling irons for fine hair, now everything comes down to your personal preference.
Determent the style of the curls that you want to create with the curler and the list will narrow a bit for you.
The only important thing, besides getting the desired hairstyle, is to protect your hair with the right products and adequate heat level.
I hope this article helped you with making the final decision.
Curl it up and happy shopping!
