Tread design is great, with self-cleaning lugs and voids, it literally catapults mud off the tire, allowing it to have a better grip on mud, sand, rocks and other kinds of off-road terrains.
Wrangler MT/R with Kevlar is a tire that’s made to last. Because of its purpose (off-road driving), the internal layers of the tire are made stronger and more resistant to punctures. They incorporated angled knobs for better grip on softer surfaces, and lugs are running down the center which enables better control in deep mud, without slipping and wriggling in one place. Also it features lugs on the sidewalls, which is very important during the turnings in the mud. Inside the tread are compounds that allow tire to have a good performance even on the hard surfaces. As almost every mud tire, this has a bias ply construction with six plies, which increases its resistance to punctures. Aggressive tread pattern is designed to help the tire to self-clean. Carlisle AT489XL ATV Tire is a perfect choice for all conditions and terrains. For a 2 or 4 wheeler, this tire is a perfect match. They can be even installed on golf carts and show a great performance in sand.
Weighing only around 15 pounds, these tires are the lightest on the market. But their performance and quality are not reduced by it. With its great tread pattern, they give you amazing traction on all surfaces. And self-cleaning tread is one of the things that make you fall in love with them. With a combination of rubber and other materials, their tread resistance to puncture is increased.
Because Carlisle’s main products are agriculturally pointed, this tire is of the same kind. They can be mounted on any ATV, but their shape is a little bit rounded as on the tractor tires, which enables superb maneuvering. DynaPro ATM is Hankook’s premium tire for all-terrain use, and for all types of vehicles. Its massive and tough look makes it suitable for off-road driving, and its radial construction makes it good for on-road driving.
Although it doesn’t have an aggressive look or deep voids and lugs, this tire is made from quality materials, with reinforced under tread layers, such as two steel belts combined with spirally wrapped nylon cap ply, which increases the resistance of the inner layers to punctures and impacts. Its wraparound tread guards the tire against cuts and bruises, and also increases traction in snowy and muddy conditions giving it rugged look. Despite the sign that says it’s good for snow, some tests showed that its performance in snowy conditions is not that satisfactory.
The tread pattern is not so aggressive looking as in other mud tires, but here the accent is put on sipes which produce more traction on wet roads, and increase the tread life. This product is made with the wider footprint for better contact with the surface and firmer grip if the surface is slippery.
Considering the price of these tires and their overall specs, they wouldn’t be the best choice just for a mud terrain. But they can handle that kind of situation very well. On highway or city roads these tires can be a little bit loud, but when compared to other tires with deeper voids, and bigger lugs, they do not make noise at all.
These tires are made for lightweight vehicles, mainly because their weight is about 52 pounds.

The price for one tire is really high, but if you want to take care of your car the best way possible, then this investment is something you should definitely consider.
Off-road tires tend to be a little inelastic because of the terrain they are designed for. That’s the reason why it often happens that tread of a tire breaks, or it starts to have little bubbles. BFGGoodrich managed this by making the tread a little bit more flexible, enabling it to conform on uneven surfaces when driven at low speeds. The tread itself is very strong, and does not wear so easily. There’s no warranty for tread wear, but there’s no need for one considering how good these tires are made.
The tread features really deep voids and lugs which is perfect for mud terrain, and it shows great performance on rocky and deep dirt surfaces. With tread design, tires are self-cleaned during the ride, and still have a good grip even when your whole car is covered with mud. If you’re expecting a lot of noise from these tires, you would be surprised how little noise they produce. With specially computer-optimized tread design the road noise is reduced to a minimum, comparing to the previous generation. Of course, this doesn’t mean that there’s no noise at all, it’s just reduced to the lowest possible point for an aggressive mud tire.
Internal layers of the tire are reinforced with twin steel belts, and Krawler TEK sidewalls and casing. Sidewalls are made more resistant to cuts and bruises, and the casing is made of 3 ply polyester construction with sidewall cords making it even stronger and more resistant than the last generation.

Buying new tires is almost an inconvenience considering that you do it once in 5 years maybe. But if you have the knowledge it shouldn’t be so difficult or annoying. So we provided you with some information on the subject to ease the pain.
1. All Terrain Tires:
AT tires, also known as all-terrain tires are, as the name says, for all kinds of terrains. They are a compromise between mud tires and highway tires. But, because it can’t be an ideal merge of these two, their performance is rated as good. All terrain tires have tighter lugs than mud tires, and they don’t produce so much noise on the streets, but compared to city tires they are loud. They have a good performance on all kinds of surfaces, such as sand, rocks, mud, etc. However, the tread pattern tends to fill up with mud and decreases the traction of a tire. These tires are made mainly for highway and city roads, and minimal use of off roads.
2. Mud Terrain Tires:
Mud terrain tires or MT are made for off-road driving. They perform great even on flurry snow, or rocky surface. The tread is made wider to better hook on anything possible at given situation. They are made of softer compounds, and they feature a rubber layer that gives a great performance in the mud. These tires are designed so that the mud and rocks get ejected from the lugs. The design prevents the tire from slipping and turning in one place. Instead, it grips on the mud and rocks. MT tires look really aggressive, and depending on the type of the car, they have a lot of space between the car and them so the mud can fly around, not falling back on the tire again. In the icy conditions, these tires can be dangerous, and they do not perform well on the wet surface, such as roads on a rainy day.
Here are some basic things you have to know before buying a mud tire:
Each tire is made from various combinations of materials that are meant to extend their durability. Depending on the type of the tire, compounds change and so does the quality, longevity, durability and so on. Here are the materials that make a tire resistant to different weather conditions and surfaces:
Rubber layer features a combination of different types of rubber, depending on the type of a tire. As we said earlier, characteristics of a mud tire and city tire are different, so the components and materials will be too. Within the rubber layer are nylon, steel, polyester and Kevlar which are furled around the tire, under the tread. They are designed to reduce the squirm and increase the resistance of the tire to the possible damage from the impacts.
The casing is the main body of the tire, and it features wire beds and steel or textile cord plies. This part of the tire does not include tread and the sidewall rubber.
Inside the tubeless tire is a rubber layer that prevents the tire from losing its air pressure. It is made from different rubber components.
The bias ply tire features rubber coated layers known as plies, which are made of textile cords, usually nylon or Kevlar. The plies are put in a diagonal form, from one bead to the other, at 30-degree angle. Every layer is crossing the one beneath it in opposing direction so to reduce the traction of the inner layers. From the outer side of the plies, is a rubber tread, which protects the tire and makes it more resistant to traction. These kinds of tires are also known as cross-ply tires.
Bias ply tires are not made to hold out heavy loads because sidewalls bend under load, and the tread is squeezed in, which makes the tire more susceptible to abrasion, and after some time it wears out. The construction of a Bias ply tire is made to be more resistant to all kinds of terrains, and the construction is mainly used for mud tires or all-terrain tires. It is possible to increase the strength of the bias ply tire buy adding more plies and bead wires, but that also increases the temperature inside of the tire and reduces its life.
We do not recommend using Bias ply tires on city or highway roads, especially for passenger cars, because these tires are not supposed to carry heavy weights.
Under the tread layer are rubber coated, reinforcing steel cable belts which are set parallel and bead to bead. The angle between belts and circumferential center line is 90 degrees. This all is made in order to lower consumption of the gas and to reduce rolling resistance. This type of tire is great for city cars. With heavy cars, full of cargo and passengers the stability is most important, and in order to have a stable car, you need to have tire’s balanced contact with the ground. The sidewall is more flexible, and the tread spreads more on the surface which makes it more resistant to punctures.
Increasing the tire’s strength is done by enlarging the diameter of the steel cables. Unlike bias ply tires, this change on the tire does not increase the temperature in the tire, but it makes it cooler, and that helps in reducing the consumption of the fuel. Thanks to the parallel belts and flexing sides, the weight of the vehicle and its passengers is evenly spread on the tires, and with that, the wearing of the tread is minimized. Although this design of steel belts is good for traction on the roads, it’s not recommended for off-road trails, because it’s more susceptible to damage from flying rocks.
The tire has a pattern on itself, and it’s designed in that way to serve a specific purpose. Whether it’s a city road tire or mud terrain tire, the pattern will be different. Tread pattern, often incorrectly called just tread, is something that defines the type of the tire too. For mud terrain tires it’s more aggressive looking, with deep voids and big lugs, and for city rides, it’s smoother looking with shallower voids. Here is an explanation of tread pattern and its features:
Tire has little canals where water, rocks, and sand enters. These little (or big as in mud tires) spaces serve as “hands” for a tire to hold on everything it can in different conditions. On city tires, these spaces are narrower, but they serve for ejecting the water on the other side of the tire, preventing slipping on the flat roads. On mud terrain tires voids are wider and deeper. Because of the bumpy roads where people usually use these tires, they need bigger “hands” to grip onto something. Also, the bigger the void, the better “self-cleaning” system that tire has. Deep and wide voids are forcing the mud and stones to continue their journey towards the back of the tire and not to stay inside the voids, and cause slipping.
Lugs are rubber parts of the tread that actually touch the surface. If they are big and wide, that tire is for off-roads, but if they’re smoother, they are meant for the city roads. Smaller and denser lugs (and voids) cause less noise on the city roads, but, on the other hand, they are not very good for off-road driving. They don’t make a lot of traction and are perfect for rainy days on the highway. The rain just slips through narrow voids and over smaller lugs and doesn’t stay between tread and road.
These are small cuts made in lugs of the tread. Their main function is to increase the traction of the tire on snow, ice, mud, or wet surfaces.
